Trackside Publications was founded by Donald Binns in 1972 to write and produce railway books on subjects that fascinated him: the railways of Latin America, and local railway history in Yorkshire, England, where he lives. (In its earlier years some now long out of print titles were produced under the "Wyvern" and "Locomotives International" imprints before the latter business was sold - it still thrives with its own range of publications). His success in this small niche is a testament to his knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment as well as the quality of the books.
Christopher Walker, a student of Latin American railways and collector of its ephemera, combined these railway interests with a longstanding association with the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway - a 30 inch gauge preserved line in Mid Wales where he was vice chairman for nine years. Chris first became associated with Trackside Publications around 1990 when he started to provide information and images for books, and subsequently has written several titles, contributed variously to just about every book published over the last decade, and has supported editing and proof reading.
In 2007 Donald Binns decided he would partially retire and from June 2008 Chris Walker took over Trackside's overseas portfolio although Donald remains very much involved as a consultant and experienced hand as well as continuing to work on local railway history books - see Book List. The change was an opportunity to move to full digital book composition which will help us remain competitive, but no change is planned in our philosophy to produce books on little-recorded railways of the world in a style that matches researched easily readable informed histories with an extensive range of previously unpublished illustrations on high quality paper.
